Water

Permanently flowing creeks and rivers were few and far between when the Anasazi occupied what is now southwestern Colorado. Within the vicinity of Ladle House, McElmo Creek and Mitchell Springs were probably the closest sources of permanent water. These were, respectively, about 1.5 miles (2.5 km) to the south and 3 miles (5 km) to the southeast. Alkali and Crow creeks are substantially closer to the site, but probably flowed only seasonally during prehistoric times.
