Earthen Mound

Description: In the west-central portion of the kiva floor was an earthen mound of unknown function. This "hump" was circular in plan view and convex in cross-section, and measured 36 cm north-south, 40 cm east-west and 3 cm in height. The Anasazi apparently constructed this feature by mounding up reddish-orange silty clay directly on top of the floor. This mound was built sometime after the kiva had been in use, as indicated by the presence of ash and corn and cactus pollen underneath it. A single grayware sherd was found on top of the mound right in the center.

Contents: Other than the sherd, no materials were associated with the earthen mound. It is not known whether the sherd was intentionally or accidentally situated on top of the mound.

Interpretation: The function of this feature is unknown. Perhaps it served as a pillow for someone sleeping in this portion of the kiva.
