Cultural Overview: Who Were the Anasazi?

Who were the Anasazi Indians? When did they live here and how did they survive?

The Anasazi were a prehistoric agricultural people who lived in this area between approximately A.D. 1-1300. Their culture was based on a sedentary agricultural lifestyle. The cultivation of corn, beans and squash was central to the economy and society of these farming people. Their reliance on agricultural crops was reflected in their establishment of permanent dwellings. During the 1,300 years of Anasazi culture, certain changes occurred in architecture, technology, social organization and population distribution. These changes have been categorized by the Pecos Classification through the use of five temporal/cultural subdivisions: Basketmaker II, Basketmaker III, Pueblo I, Pueblo II, and Pueblo III.
