Abstract

Ladle House (site 5MT3873) is a multi-component Anasazi Basketmaker III, Pueblo I and Pueblo II home located in the Greenlee Parcel of Indian Camp Ranch in Montezuma County, southwestern Colorado. During the summers of 1994 and 1995, archaeological excavations were conducted at the site. This work resulted in the complete excavation of a Pueblo II kiva. As outlined in the research design, excavations were conducted in order to better understand the Pueblo II occupation of the area. As a result of this work, information was retrieved which indicates that this kiva was used as a domestic structure by a family of Anasazi farmers. This interpretation is congruent with findings from several other Pueblo II sites in Montezuma County, and is in contrast to earlier interpretations which suggest that kivas were ceremonial structures used only by men.
